Something to think about...
Good morning!
This is a very hectic day for me...
We are getting ready for another seminar workshop about solid waste management. I have so many things on my mind right now. But one thing that actually stuck to my head is the fact that here in our country, we have to make training workshop to teach people the proper segregation of garbage. It's suppose to be fairly easy. I just don't understand why some people have to be hard headed on not following these simple process of segregating garbage.
Most of them say that it's tedious. More work for them if they start segregating garbage when there are garbage men collecting these waste. Other reasons were the cost. They say that if they start segregating their waste, it would cost them more.
I say that's a load of crap. It doesn't cost so much at all. And tedious as it may be, think of the good it will do. Garbage segregation minimizes the waste that goes to dumpsites, lessening another smokey mountain and Payatas incident. Garbage segregation means business for people with no work. Some garbage can be recycled and made into something else. Newpapers can be made into baskets, doy packs (zesto packages) can be made into bags and slippers (and foreigners love these things that they actually pay big money to have it exported), magazines can be made into necklaces, pentelpens changed into ballpens...see the possibilities are endless!
I believe that we Filipinos are a very creative group. We just don't use our heads in the proper way. Instead of using our heads to better our already dying country, we use our heads to help in killing it.
A little reminiscing for a moment...
Back in college, I was a member of an environmental friendly organization called HABITAT (it's different from HABITAT for humanities). Anyway, that organization got me to be aware of what has been happening to our country's environment. People just throw garbage anywhere! On the streets, beaches, forests, and places where you shouldn't be throwing them. Unfortunately for me, the organization died in my hands. All my officers abandon me save for one person whom I am so greatful for.
It was really a pity that HABITAT died. There weren't anymore people who would like to be members of it. Most people are not aware of what has been happening in our environment. They would rather look the other way when you try to point it out to them. It's really sad to think that we help in destroying mother nature and we just pretend nothing is happening.
I'm so afraid what will happened in the future if we don't fix this problem now. What would happened to the next generation? Wouldn't we want our children to grow up healthy? Wouldn't we want to let them experience free drinking water from the faucet instead of the bottled water that cost P10 - P20 for 50ml that we are so used to now? Wouldn't we want our children go biking in the neighborhood and not worry about the air that they breathe?
We really need to think about what we are doing to the environment. If not for ourselves then for the future. I myself do not want these things to happened. I do not want my future children to live on a grey planet.
There is still a chance for us to change. There is still a chance to save our environment. We just have to stop complaining and start caring...If not for ourselves, then let's do this for our children.
As the song goes, "You can own the earth and still all you own is earth until you can paint with all the colors of the wind."
We do not own the earth, we just borrowed it from our children.
