This discussion was brought up when we were having a training seminar. It was on one of our breaks that our trainor just mentioned that Harry Potter should have been a bad guy rather than this sweet boy that everybody pities so much.
If Harry Potter was real boy, and he was in this situation that he was brought up by his aunt and uncle because his parents were killed. His relatives doesn't even want to have to do anything to him and they more or less treat him badly, like making him live in a broom closet at the bottom of the staircase. Later finding out that he was a wizard and that his parents didn't die in a car crash but by some spell that only left you alive.
Well, as i see it there are two possibilities that he could have done: he really could be the bad boy type of kid who is against the whole world because the world is against him or he could take the martyr route and just take it all in, then one day he will leave everything behind and start all over again.
Now, why would he become a bad boy? Mistreatment of a child could actually result to that. If the child is treated badly and he thinks that the world abandoned him, sure enough he will treat the world badly as well. It's like, "this is what I get for being a child all alone with no companion. Even my parents left me because I'm good for nothing so why would I care about the people around me in the first place?"
Well, actually if you can see in the later books, Harry has shown these tendencies. He gets frustrated and angry easily especially when he thinks that people just ignore his accomplishments.
Then we have the positive reaction. "So, I got stuck in this crappy place? Nothing I can do about it so I just have to make the most out of it. I won't stay here forever you know."
Now, this is mostly what we saw in Harry Potter. Trying to keep his nose clean until such time that he would leave them. But that doesn't stop him from wishing that he wouldn't go back to the Dursleys.
Harry Potter can be seen in these two personalities. You really can't blame him for it. He is really weighed down by all that has been happening to him that he doesn't know how to react to things anymore.
Why didn't he turn into a bad guy even if he was mistreated by his relatives? Well, he knows that his parents died in a car crash. He was there during that time that the car crashed but he was the only one who survived. It only means that his parents didn't leave him intentionally, he was just lucky that he survived and he has the scar to prove it. He also see in the facial expression of this aunt and uncle that they never seem to like Harry's parents in the first place. Unconsciously, he's buying his time so that one day, he will go back and tell them that he's way better than their son Dudely and that he has far greater things to achieve.
Harry might be left alone in the world but he knew that his parents did love him. That emotional connection to his lond deceased parents is the only thing that keeping him from doing something he would regret int he future.
After all, he's only a boy. He needs to analyze and see things in a different perspective. He knows that he's different and he was trying to figure out what. He doesn't really have time before to actually be grumpy and think of bad things when at an early age, he's trying to figure out where he belongs.
Think about it if you were Harry Potter. What would you have done in his situation when at age 11 you don't know what you're capable of doing.
