GO KIMI!!!
Last Sunday, Kimi Raikkonen won his second podium finish in the Brazilian Grand Prix. The race was a sight to behold. The safety car went out 5 times and the race stopped even before the total lap finished. There were so many highlights but the one that is stuck into my mind are three events that really changed the race. Though there were so much of those race-changing events, these three was really shocking for me to watch. Two of which is the retirement of the two Ferrari drivers, Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. Michael was aiming for his first win this season (wanting to win his 6th World Championship Title) and Reubens was determined to break his curse of not winning in his home track.
Rubens, after a stunning overtaking maneuver, was already leading to the race. But after two laps around the grid his car suddenly died yet again ending his race in his home track. Rubens is not my favorite driver but what I do know is that he deserved to win in his home track even if it would only be that one time. It has been ten years and he has yet to step on that podium and accept a trophy. His fans were cheering for him in the stands and it’s really disappointing to see that after that great overtaking maneuver against David Coultard, he wouldn’t be able to finish the race anymore. His car died and that’s the end of it.
As for Michael, well I guess it’s one bad luck after another. He has yet to stand on the podium as well and win a trophy. Last race, he didn’t even finish. He slipped, skidded and crashed. You rarely see a mistake coming from Michael Schumacher on a wet race. He’s great on wet weather conditions and seeing him slip and slide was really shocking for me. I don’t believe that he not at his peak anymore. It’s not his time to retire either. But the way he’s been racing well I guess the pressure is so much for him. I don’t like Michael either but I want to see him at least once in the podium and let Kimi win World Champion this year. J
Another shocking event was the accident of Fernando Alonzo. Alonzo won third place but suffered what I hope is just a minor injury on the ankle and whip lash due to the crash that he experience after passing through the debris of Mark Webber’s car. I guess he didn’t see that coming. Though the yellow flags were already waving because of the massive debris that was caused by the Jaguar, he sped on, hit some debris and went spiraling to the tire wall ending his race. I hope that he’s all right. The trophy presentation and press conference was really lacking because he wasn’t there.
And then I was playing the “what-if” game again. There were so many thing that had happened in that race and all those what-ifs could have change the result of the race.
Like, what if Rubens’ car have no problem, would he have won the race? What if Michael, Juan Pablo Montoya and Jacque Villenueve didn’t retire, would we have seen them in the podium? What if Ralph Schumacher and David Coultard didn’t make a pit stop to change tires, would they have won a podium finish? If Mark Webber didn’t crash, sending Alonzo crashing as well, would we have seen Fisichella on the top of the podium and not Kimi?
I guess Kimi was really lucky that day. I like Kimi. He’s the driver I’m cheering for in this race but it really makes me think that if it wasn’t for the things that had happened, would he really won the race? He’s a good driver and all. Has shown everyone that he can stop Michael from over-taking. He has also shown that he can be a competitor on wet weather conditions. But the circumstances in the race had led him to win first place that day. So would he have still won if it weren’t for those circumstances? I am still wondering until now.
But all these aside. I’m actually happy that he won again. That means that he’s still leading the driver’s championship and if this goes on, he would be world champion for this season for sure. Let’s just keep crossing our fingers and hope that he keeps winning podium finishes. J
