Simon by Lifehouse
Catch your breath
Hit the wall
Scream out loud
As you start to crawl
Back in your cage
The only place
Where they will
Leave you alone
'Cause the weak will seek the weaker 'til they've broken them
Could you get it back again?
Would it be the same?
Fulfillment to their lack of strength at your expense
Left you with no defense
They tore it down
And I have felt the same
As you I've felt the same
As you I've felt the same
Locked inside
The only place
Where you feel sheltered
Where you feel safe
You lost yourself
In your search to find
Something else to hide behind
'Cause the fearful always preyed upon your confidence
Didn't they see the consequence
They pushed you around
The arrogant build kingdoms made of a different ones
Breakin them 'til they become
Just another crown
And I have felt the same
As you I've felt the same
As you I've felt the same
As you I've felt the same
Refuse to feel
Anything at all
Refuse to slip
Refuse to fall
Can't be weak
Can't stand still
Watch your back
'Cause no one will
You don't know why they had to go this far
Traded your worth for these scars
For your only company
And don't believe the lies that they had told to you
Not one word is true
'Cause you're alright
You're alright
You're alright
And I have felt the same
As you I've felt the same
As you I've felt the same
As you I've felt the same
As you I've felt the same...
This song is actually a part of Lifehouse's first album. I really haven't paid attention to it up until recently until I started listening to our old CD collection but it's actually a nice song...sad but nice song nonetheless. Nice not because it's a sappy love song or the melody is great but nice because it teaches us something. Read the lyrics and everything will make sense, one way or the other. There's a lesson to be learned in this song and it's not about finding the one you love. It's about the facts of life that people don't really want to see but its happening right in front of you.
"The weak will seek the weaker 'til they've broken them", one of the lines say. That's what bullies are made of. They're people who think they'll look strong if they pick on others who can't defend themselves. Whether it be fighting in combat, word wars, or different challenges that one would be facing against an opponent who couldn't defend themselves. There are peole who are like that. There are those who prey upon the weak because it would make them look strong. There are those who seek out people who couldn't stand up on their own and just be beaten down into nothing, until that person loses all his self-esteem and just hide. It's sad but it's true. It's unfair but the reality of the matter is, it is happening today. And people who see this happening to their comrades, friends and family doesn't do anything to stop it because they're afraid that if they help him/her out, they would be the next target.
"The arrogant build kingdoms make of a different ones. Breaking them 'til they become just another crown." There is this saying that history is recorded by the winners. Haven't you noticed that the "good guys" always win? But what if you were just made to believe that they're good but in reality, they're just power hungry monsters who doesn't really deserve the win? But because of some twist of fate they were crowned the heroes? Just because they have the power to change history, they did so so that they will appear the heroes. And here we are cheering them on for a job well done.
"The fearful always prey upon your confidence." People who can't fight. People who are afraid to stand up and fight. Rape victims, murder witnesses, battered wives, molested children, etc. The list goes on and on and on. They lack the courage to stand and fight. They do not have the strength to fight back. These are the people crying for help but because we ourselves are afraid, we fall on deaf ears. It's sad but it's true. We turn our backs on these people because we are afraid that if we do something about it, it might happen to us as well.
The reality of the matter is, the people who are doing the oppression are the ones that are more afraid. But since they do not want to show how afraid they are, they take on the people who they know are afraid of them. And since no one is stopping this kind of oppression, it would just continue to go on. It's a vicious cycle. And unless we stop this, there would be people out there beating other people until they are nothing but a shell of their former self. Unless we stop this horrible things from happening, how long before it would fall on your own doorsteps? How long before a brother, a sister, mother, father, grandparents or a close friend would experience it before we act upon it? How long before you will experience the oppression as well?
To quote Qui-gon Jin in Episode One, "there's always a bigger fish."
Don't think that you're at the top of the food chain. Don't think that no one can touch you. Because someone will always be greater than you. Someone will be there to give you a miserable time. It will start small but it will become bigger if you won't stop it. Be alert and be wary. You might be next.
On a good note, the song did end in a sort of positive note. "Don't believe the lies that they had told to you...Not one word is true...'cause you're alright."
We can ignore them...we can fight back. In the long run, it is still up to you to do something about your life.
